The Full Breakfast: Jan. 28, 2015 edition

(Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday we’re going to give you the best of links and news from across the European leagues — consider it your fix of “The Full Breakfast” until the weekend.)

We’ve got one half of the Capital One Cup final after Chelsea clawed its way to a 1-0 extra time win over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Could it be an all-London final? Tottenham goes in to the second leg of its semi-final against Sheffield United with a 1-0 lead. We’ll have more on that later in the day.

However, there are plenty of other intriguing bits of news from across the pond. So, let’s dive in to this edition of “The Full Breakfast” for Jan. 28, 2105…

FIFA

Former Portugal and Real Madrid Star Luis Figo announced he is going to run for the FIFA presidency. He revealed his intentions and reasoning in an exclusive interview with CNN on Wednesday morning.

England

Chelsea are through to a cup final, but you wouldn’t have known it by Jose Mourinho’s reaction. His words after the 1-0 extra-time win got him a £25,000 fine.

Speaking of that semi-final win, Diego Costa was extremely lucky to avoid a red card. Mourinho decided to back his star striker instead, claiming it’s all part of the conspiracy against his team. Suuuurreee….whatever you say oh “great one.”

The magic of the FA Cup won’t be televised, as giant killers Bradford City were snubbed by the BBC and BT Sport for the fifth round ties.

From the “not so shocking” department — EPL clubs are driving record global transfer fees, according to the BBC.

The January transfer window has been quite…but leave it up to Arsenal to give us the biggest rumor of the late window. According to The Telegraph, the Gunners are in for Real Madrid’s Karem Benzema & the Spanish giants want in for Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling.

Arsenal may not be done trying to buy, because the Daily Express is reporting Wenger is putting in a serious offer to Barcelona to try and lure Luis Suarez back to England. Suarez has featured in just five matches for the Spanish giants since his suspension was lifted back in November.

Spain

Abu Dhabi Bernabau? If reports (including from the Daily Mail) are to be believed, Real Madrid are about to sell naming rights to its historic stadium for a whole £15 million (or $22.8 million).

Tottenham fans can breathe a sigh of relief, as they are likely to not have to cheer against their favorite son. Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale put to rest rumors of a move to Manchester United late on Tuesday (here in America).

Villarreal will have a Gunner on the roster, as striker Joel Campbell has made a loan move to the Spainsh side, per the BBC.

Germany

Borussia Dortmund have been sellers during the last few transfer windows. Don’t expect that to continue this time around, as star Marcus Rues isn’t going anywhere according to Sky Sports.

Wolfsburg may or may not be in for Chelsea star Andre Schurrle, depending on how you want to read comments from the club’s chief executive.

Hamburg were in some financial trouble, with a reported 6.6 million euro loss on the books. However, a local businessman has come to the rescue per ESPNFC.

France

OGC Nice reserves apparently are experimenting with a new free kick defense…including pulling the keeper out from net.
