32 Flags European Power Rankings

Every week, the staff at 32 Flags will each rank their top 15 European teams of the week. Each staffers list is compiled and tabulated and results in a final top 10 that make up our Power Rankings.

#1) Real Madrid – Spain
Phil: 1st, Marc: 1st, Andy: 1st, Jeff: 1st
Last Week Power Ranking Position: 1st
League Position: 4th in La Liga
Last week results: Defeated Cordoba in La Liga

Real Madrid unanimously claims our top spot for another week. While they claim they are fatigued due to SuperCup play, they sure didn’t show it in League play when they won 2-0 versus Cordoba.

#2) Manchester City – England
Phil: 2nd, Marc: 3rd, Andy: 2nd, Jeff: 2nd
Last Week Power Ranking Position: 3rd
League Position: 2nd in EPL
Last week results: Defeated Liverpool in EPL

Manchester City moves up a spot in the rankings due to their systematic defeat to Liverpool. Many people didn’t know whether or not Man City could win the EPL back-to-back but if they can put in performances like that, they’ll definitely win.

#3) Bayern Munich – Germany
Phil: 3rd, Marc: 2nd, Andy: 3rd, Jeff: 3rd
Last Week Power Ranking Position: 2nd
League Position: 3rd in Bundesliga
Last week results: Defeated Wolfsburg in Bundesliga

Bayern probably deserved a draw against Wolfsburg but they got the win nonetheless and that’s all that matters in the record books. They drop a spot to Man City but are still comfortably in the top three.

#4) Chelsea – England
Phil: 4th, Marc: 4th, Andy: 4th, Jeff: 4th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: 5th
League Position: 3rd in EPL
Last week results: Defeated Leicester City in EPL

Even though Chelsea defeated two newly promoted teams in the EPL, they still gained a spot in the rankings. Yeah, they should’ve beaten Burnley and Leicester City but they have looked good doing it. It wasn’t the normal “parking the bus” nature Jose Mourinho is known for.

#5) Barcelona – Spain
Phil: 5th, Marc: 7th, Andy: 6th, Jeff: 6th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: 4th
League Position: 1st in La Liga
Last week results: Defeated Elche in La Liga

Early in the season, you can potentially see strange teams on top of the tables of various leagues. Barcelona made sure to take the lead in La Liga as early as possible. Barcelona loses a spot in the rankings but they couldn’t do much better than a 3-0 win in the first game.

#6) Juventus – Italy
Phil: 10th, Marc: 5th, Andy: 5th, Jeff: 5th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: 10th
League Position: N/A
Last week results: N/A

Juventus is the only team on the list who hasn’t started their league yet so it’s kind of tough to judge them. Luckily for them, they gained four spots on the rankings because of issues surrounding the teams they passed so sometimes you can be better by not having to play a game.

#7) Paris Saint-Germain – France
Phil: 7th, Marc: 6th, Andy: 8th, Jeff: 10th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: 7th
League Position: 6th in Ligue 1
Last week results: Drew Evian Thonon Gaillard in Ligue 1

Let’s not fool anyone, PSG is still going to win Ligue 1. Having just one win in three games, you could say PSG is struggling, but there should be no worries.

#8) Atletico Madrid – Spain
Phil: 11th, Marc: 10th, Andy: 7th, Jeff: 7th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: 6th
League Position: 4th in La Liga
Last week results: Drew Rayo Vallecano in La Liga

Atletico Madrid may have won a trophy already but those extra two games may have impacted their start to La Liga as they had a rather lethargic 0-0 draw this week.

#9) Bayer Leverkusen – Germany
Phil: 12th, Marc: 9th, Andy: 9th, Jeff: 9th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: N/A
League Position: 2nd in Bundesliga
Last week results: Defeated Borussia Dortmund in Bundesliga

Bayer Leverkusen makes their debut here at #9 by rather convincingly defeating Borussia Dortmund. They scored in the first seven seconds of the game and never looked back. Maybe Leverkusen will have something to say in regards to the top two in the Bundesliga.

#10) Liverpool – England
Phil: 14th, Marc: 8th, Andy: 10th, Jeff: 8th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: 8th
League Position: 9th in EPL
Last week results: Lost to Manchester City in EPL

Liverpool had a rather tough loss to Manchester City. Man City exposed some weaknesses in Liverpool’s back line and dominated after the first 40 minutes. If this happened against any other than the #2 team in the Power Ranking, they would be dropped but they barely stay on the list so far.
