This Tyne-Wear Derby has always been an intense game and this latest edition has been no different. Sunderland needs this win in order to stay above the relegation zone and Newcastle needs this win so they can have bragging rights that they helped send their rival out of the EPL.
After 45 minutes of nothing, Sunderland suddenly got themselves into the lead. Jermain Defoe scored a goal that would be goal of the week in any other week but this and grabbed the lead for Sunderland as the Stadium of Light roared with cheer and keep their hopes alive in staying in the EPL.
That goal was a long time coming for Sunderland fans. That was the first Sunderland goal scored at the Stadium of Light since January 31. Defoe was nearly in tears as he walked off the field at halftime. That’s what the Tyne-Wear Derby means to these teams.
