VIDEO: Thiago Silva Scores Beauty, Brazil Advances in Copa América

Brazil advanced to the next stage of the Copa América by defeating Venezuela 2-1 in Estadio Monumental in Santiago, thereby eliminating Venezuela from the competition.

Brazil, who is without the services of Neymar, did not waste time getting ahead of La Vinotino as it took Thiago Silva just nine minutes to score from a nicely taken corner kick where he caught the ball masterfully off a volley and nearly decapitated Venezuelan goalkeeper Alain Baroja as the ball found its’ way into the net. Take a look.

Brazil tacked on one more goal thanks to Firmino’s nice finish to double Brazil’s lead from a Willian cross. Take a look at this fantastic run and even better cross by Willian to enable Firmino to score an easy goal for the 2-0.

The game would not end without drama, however, as Venezuela would get one back in the 86th minute when Nicolás Fedor headed in a rebound that Brazilian goalkeeper, Jefferson, parried into the post and managed to bounce right to Fedor for the easy head-in. It would prove to be too little, too late for Venezuela as Brazil would end up winning the game 2-1.

In the other group game, Colombia and Peru fought to a scoreless draw. Peru, the big surprise of the tournament, finishes as second place of the group and assures themselves a guaranteed spot in the knockout stages.

After today’s results, Brazil finishes in the top spot of Group C, with Peru as runner-up, and Colombia managing a third-place finish. With four points Colombia ends up gaining the second remaining third-place spot in the knockout stages finishing just one point above other potential Ecuador, who now is eliminated from the tournament.

Now, the quarter-finals are set and it will be:

Uruguay taking on Chile on June 24th in Santiago,

Bolivia vs. Peru on June 25th in Temuco,

Argentina facing Colombia on June 26th in Viña del Mar, and

Brazil against Paraguay on June 27th in Concepción.
