A story like this is what makes the FA Cup so magical. 22 year old James Phillips will become the youngest manager in FA Cup history Saturday. He is the manager of Wessex Premier Division team, Romsey Town F.C., and they are playing against Fareham Town.
Romsey Town is in the 9th level of English football and what makes the FA Cup so great is that every English team from the amateurs and the weekend warriors in the 9th and 10th levels of English football to the top EPL teams has a chance to win the oldest tournament in the world. The bigger teams won’t be playing until January but the FA Cup actually starts this weekend with the lower level teams.
Phillips started his coaching career when he was 16 and credited his managerial knowledge by playing lots and lots of “Championship Manager.” So for those of us who play “Football Manager” for hours on end and like to take small clubs to the top of the virtual club football world, know that it can potentially lead to a chance at the real thing.
