32 Flags European Power Rankings

Every Tuesday, the staff at 32 Flags will each rank their top 15 European teams of the week. Each staffers list is compiled and tabulated and results in a final top 10 that make up our Power Rankings.

#1) Real Madrid – Spain
Phil: 1st, Andy: 1st, Jeff: 1st
Last Week Power Ranking Position: N/A
League Position: N/A
Last week results: Defeated Sevilla 2-0 in UEFA Super Cup and drew Atletico Madrid 1-1 in Supercup 1st leg

The defending UEFA Champions League winners unanimously take our number one spot. They returned by winning the Super Cup and while they haven’t started league play yet, they are #1.

#2) Bayern Munich – Germany
Phil: 2nd, Andy: 3rd, Jeff: 2nd
Last Week Power Ranking Position: N/A
League Position: N/A
Last week results: Lost to Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in German Super Cup and defeated Preuben Munster 4-1 in DFB Cup

It can be argued that Bayern Munich should be a bit lower because they lost to Dortmund but they are still a strong team and will show it in league play

#3) Manchester City – England
Phil: 6th, Andy: 2nd, Jeff: 5th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: N/A
League Position: 2nd in EPL
Last week results: Defeated Newcastle 2-0 in EPL

Manchester City had some moments where Newcastle could’ve gotten a result but champions close out games and that’s exactly what Manchester City did.

#4) Barcelona – Spain
Phil: 3rd, Andy: 7th, Jeff: 3rd
Last Week Power Ranking Position: N/A
League Position: N/A
Last week results: N/A

Barcelona has stocked up by getting Luis Suarez but he won’t be much help with these rankings for the next few months. Will Barca be like the team from a few years ago, or last year?

#5) Chelsea – England
Phil: 4th, Andy: 4th, Jeff: 6th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: N/A
League Position: 1st in EPL
Last week results: Defeated Burnley 3-1 in EPL

Chelsea soundly defeated Burnley but you could say that they should’ve beaten Burnley like that. Either way, Chelsea is putting their stake into the title hunt.

#6) Atletico Madrid – Spain
Phil: 7th, Andy: 6th, Jeff: 4th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: N/A
League Position: N/A
Last week results: Drew Real Madrid 1-1 in Supercup 1st leg

Atletico got the crucial away goal in the Supercup. Their La Liga counterparts, Real Madrid and Barcelona, may be splashing the cash going after anyone and everyone but Atletico keeps chugging along and going after trophies with the best of them.

#7) Paris Saint Germain – France
Phil: 5th, Andy: 5th, Jeff: 7th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: N/A
League Position: 3rd in Ligue 1
Last week results: Drew Reims 2-2 and defeated Bastia 2-0 in Ligue 1

PSG is pretty much in a league with themselves in France so their true test is going to be in Champions League. Now with Ibrahimovic missing six weeks due to injury, can PSG survive the first couple group stage games?

#8) Liverpool – England
Phil: 10th, Andy: 8th, Jeff: 8th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: N/A
League Position: 3rd in EPL
Last week results: Defeated Southampton 2-1 in EPL

Liverpool met a tough Southampton and got the three points even when it didn’t look like they deserved all three. Either way, they’re 3rd in the EPL and will experience Champions League for the first time in a few years.

#9) Borussia Dortmund – Germany
Phil: 9th, Andy: 9th, Jeff: 9th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: N/A
League Position: N/A
Last week results: Defeated Bayern Munich 2-0 in German Super Cup and defeated St. Kickers 4-1 in DFB Cup

Like I said with Bayern Munich but the other way around, you can argue that Dortmund should be higher on the list. Like with Atletico, they don’t spend the money like Bayern, but they can give them a tough time.

#10) Juventus – Italy
Phil: 8th, Andy: 10th, Jeff: 10th
Last Week Power Ranking Position: N/A
League Position: N/A
Last week results: N/A

Juventus dominated in Serie A and like PSG, their focus should be on Champions League. That’ll be the big test for them.
