Report: Luis Suarez banned for nine international matches and four months

The punishment for Luis Suarez is in, and it’s not good news for either Uruguay or Liverpool. Suarez has reportedly been suspended for nine international matches and has been banned from all football activity for four months by FIFA. The four month ban also includes a stadium ban, and a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs.

It goes without saying that this is a huge deal. Uruguay will be without Suarez, pending appeal, for the rest of the World Cup, no matter how far they advance. They’ll also be without Suarez for an undetermined period in international play after the World Cup concludes, based on their level of advancement, which is obviously a step in the wrong direction for Uruguay.

And then, there’s the matter of Liverpool. Suarez will miss (by my count) nine Premier League matches, including clashes with Everton, Manchester City, and Tottenham. He’ll also end up missing three Champions League matches in the group stage, a potentially fatal blow to Liverpool’s hopes at advancing into the knockout stage. Needless to say, even though the suspension doesn’t seem to be very stiff, FIFA is really dropping the hammer on Suarez and his clubs.
