Only ATP World Tour Clay Event On U.S. Soil Resides In Houston

The 2015 ATP World Tour stops in Houston this afternoon, with sets to begin at 12:00 noon.  The victor of last seasons singles, Fernando Verdasco, will look to repeat again as he is seeded No. 6. This historic venue is home to the only ATP World Tour event on U.S. soil that is played on clay.  The 2015 Houston edition features singles stars American’s John Isner and Sam Querrey as well as the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed Feliciano Lopez.   The doubles tournament, won by Bob and Mike Bryan last season, see them seeded as the No. 1 overall doubles pairing.  The Bryan brothers, holders of the ATP No. 1 World Doubles Ranking, will also look to repeat last season result as they emerged as champions defeating David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 6-4, (11-9).

Verdasco, a left-handed Spaniard, is 5-1 all time in this event. His 2014 Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship victory saw him defeat Nicolas Almagro in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(4).  The 31-year-old, currently ranked 30th in the ATP Singles World Tour Standings defeated Paolo Lorenzi in the opening round.  He will face the South Korean Hyeon Chung in the second round, setting up a potential clash with John Isner in the Quarterfinals.

Heading into the singles round of 16, fans in attendance will see multiple potential thrilling matches.  No. 1-seeded Feliciano Lopez faces Sam Groth, as Lopez makes his first appearance after a first round bye.  In a clash of Americans, California native Steve Johnson will take on the tournament’s No. 8 seeded Sam Querrey.  Another match of interest pits No. 2 seeded Roberto Bautista Agut vs. Jack Sock.  Sock, ranked 46 overall in the ATP Singles, would benefit greatly if able to upset Agut, who makes his first appearance after a first round bye.

The doubles bracket features the dominant Bryan brothers, who will face Philipp Petzschner and Jank Tipsarevic in their opening match.  If victorious, they will battle Ricardas Berankis and Teymuraz Gabashvili in a potential quarterfinals matchup.  Another match of interest features the No. 3-seeded pairing of Robert Lindstedt and Jurgen Melzer vs. Marcus Daniell and Santiago Giraldo.  This should be an exciting match, as Daniell and Giraldo look to upset the favored Lindstedt and Melzer.
