Weekend Wonderings

weekendwonderings Welcome to this week’s edition of Weekend Wonderings.  Yeesh, here we are, the 1st weekend of August.  We’ll have a couple updates on The James, comment on some football related events and wrap it up with a song in our hearts.  To get us in the mood, here is permanent musical accompaniment by Maroon 5. Grab whatever beverage that you need and let’s proceed.

On this date, August 10th, one hundred years ago; the Germans occupied Liege, the French retreated in Alsace and advanced in Lorraine, France declared war on Austria-Hungary. And so it went..

The James/Wexner:

Here a a few, six to be exact, facts about the construction of the new home of The James.

With a new facility, The James will need additional staffing to support its mission. There will be an open house for prospective volunteers this coming Tuesday, August 12th from 4:00-6:00 pm.   Follow the link for registration. The session will be at the Longaberger Alumni House. This is a good opportunity to Pay It Forward. The James is also recruiting nurses. If you or someone you know may be interested, please pass the word.

Finally, here is Dr Michael Caligiuri talking about this weekend’s Pelotonia event.

Commentary:

A bit light this week, catching our breaths before the start of football season.  As Jason pointed out Wednesday, the Buckeyes are now in camp, and I imagine a few of them were trying to catch their breaths as well.

Youth is served.  My wife and I need some tree removal/trimming done, so we made arrangements with a tree remover/trimmer guy to stop out Wednesday for an estimate. He called to reschedule (no problem) because he’d run into an unforeseen commitment. He was shanghaied into being an assistant coach for his son’s football team, who evidently are “in camp” as well. I remember a similar situation many years ago; my first day of Little League baseball practice (eight years old), my dad stopped in to watch, and ended up being an assistant coach for the next few years.. It happens.  Tree Guy said it was his son’s 1st year of football and they were both pretty excited. I asked how old his son is, and the reply.. six years old. I know the game has changed significantly over the past generation, or two, but six years old. Wow.

Keeping it civil. My wife and I were at a social function last Sunday afternoon. It centered around her fellow staffers, but a few of us spouses did attend.  Several of us (spouses) were standing around, glass in hand, chatting and otherwise having a cordial bonding session. Then, one of the spouses veered off to give his opinion (I don’t recall anyone asking for it) on why the American doctors shouldn’t be repatriated back from Africa for medical treatment.  I took issue with that, and offered a rebuttal why they should be brought home.  At that point, the subject was dropped, and the afternoon continued on in a cordial manner.

Other than you still need to be mindful at Sunday afternoon “socials”, what’s the point?  It’s this. Football season is approaching and fans will be fired up to support their team and express their opinions in social media. The two aren’t necessarily congruent..  From a few months ago, WVaBuckeye has some tips in his Bumblin’ section on not letting the passion get the better of you. Good advice.

Sunday’s Song:

In light of events that occurred a century ago, I could cue this song up on a daily basis. This should do it, for a while, anyway. From the 10th anniversary concert of Les Miserables; Michael Ball’s Empty Chairs at Empty Tables.
