Alec Martinez needs surgery after taking a puck to the face

Alec Martinez, defenseman for the LA Kings, will require surgery after taking a puck off the face during a game for Finland's TPS Turku. The shot, one that came from the point, struck Martinez as he tried to prevent an opposing forward from positioning himself in the crease. Video of the injury can be seen below.

It's always scary when you see an opposing player frantically calling to the bench for medical assistance. Chalk this up as one of those unlucky injuries that you can't really do much to prevent. Martinez already wears a visor but he was unfortunate to have the puck strike directly below it, near his mouth. The defenseman was in relatively good spirits about the injury, tweeting the message below.

It's unclear when Martinez will be back at 100 percent, but he at least won't have to worry about missing any NHL action as the league and NHLPA continue to run in circles about the new collective bargaining agreement.
