On Tuesday, the Islanders announced on their official site that they will be holding a fundraiser at the Nassau Coliseum for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The entire New York/New Jersey metropolitan area was hit by Hurricane Sandy, which left tens of thousands of area residents without homes and many more without power and heat. As a Long Island resident, I can attest to the damage that the storm had caused and while I still had my home I was without power for several days. There are still residents across the tri-state area who are left in the cold and aren’t being told when their electricity and heat will be turned back on.
The event is called “Hockey with a Heart” and will take place on November 12th between 2 and 8 PM at the Nassau Coliseum. Parking will be free and there will be open skates running hourly on a first come-first serve basis. The organization urges everybody coming to bring a donation to help the victims, such as non-perishable food and unopened baby formula and diapers, although it is not required to attend to benefit. Monetary donations are also accepted and all proceeds will go to the American Red Cross. Appearances will be make by the Islanders Ice Girls and Sparky, their mascot. The Islanders will also open up concessions for people who wish to purchase food and drinks.
