Report: NHL salary cap will be around $70 million in 2014-15

The NHL is planning to raise the salary cap for the 2014-15 season. While nothing has been officially announced, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports that the new cap should be around $70 million and that the league will unveil their cap projections to the NHL Board of Governors next week.

No real surprise here. It's been widely speculated that the NHL would bump their cap sooner than later. Currently the salary cap sits at $64.3 million. With 20 NHL teams sitting within $3.6 million of the cap, the NHL is looking to allow teams to spend more money if they so desire.

Does revenue around the NHL support raising the cap? Yes. A new massive TV deal, more outdoor games and steady growth have all but guaranteed a boost in the cap. The Globe and Mail has a solid article detailing how the new Rogers TV deal and growing NHL revenue will influence the cap and why we should expect it to swell beyond $70 million in the near future.
