Christmas is the season of giving. Perhaps it's for the best, then, that the Winnipeg Jets organization give their fans a break and pretend to try to do something about the situation that their team has found themselves in this holiday season. Maybe it's time for Claude Noel to have popped his last lozenge.
There's only so much that can be done with this line-up. This line-up that has been cobbled together from waiver-wire pickups, marginal free-agents, old players who were good ages ago, and a core left over from Atlanta - all of which have been handsomely rewarded with large contracts for accomplishing somewhere between jack and squat.
Would firing Noel be using him as a fall guy for the real problems of the franchise? Absolutely, but he's the only expendable person. Owner Mark Chipman just gave the general manager, Kevin Cheveldayoff, a four-year extension as a reward for taking steps to keep the Jets squarely hovering around the average mark. Claude Noel? No such luck. He's the owners' out clause, their chance to make it seem like the organization is being pro-active in taking steps forward to compete.
They lost to the two worst teams in the NHL this month. The Buffalo Sabres beat them 4-2, and the Edmonton Oilers roundly thumped them 6-2. They're 11th in the West, and one point away from the basement of the Central Division. The honeymoon period's over in Winnipeg - fans have expectations. It's time to at least look like you're trying to live up with them. Follow the plan. They already have it set up; how much longer is the team going to wait before they finally start to try to save face?

Gee joe, a whinerpegger for sure... I started going to EHL gams in 1960 in Charlotte,N.C., then moved to Atlanta, was at first Flames game, 1-1 tie with Buffalo and last one 4/16/80 2-5 loss.
You have NO clue about the game, the city, if you can call it that, I have been to your city several times, best thing... is when I leave. If YOU checked the FACTS, you will see that Atlanta set expansion attendence records in their first two years...
It was they DISHONEST, LYING owners a group of BED WETTERS who never supported hockey, and they kept a GM who should have been Fired, before he was hired !!!
Hockey will work in Atlanta, with a good owner, who gives a CRAP about the owner now !!! He will realize this purchase was a mistake in a couple more years ! I LOVE to see them LOSING, they are WORSE now than in Atlanta.
I know several players and they DO NOT like it there... Small town, small arena and so on !!! NOT a major league city for sure, NHL needs to cut bait now and GET OUT of Whinerpeg !
Well a MINOR LEAGUE coach in a SUPER MINORLEAGUE town, a MINOR LEAGUE BUILDING AND Terrible weather !!! They are WORSE NOW THAN THEY EVER WERE IN ATLANTA, Despite DUMB don waddell.
Time to move back to ATLANTA, And The Philips,With SOLID NEW OWNER< or build a NEW ARENA in Cobb County at the Braves site and the NHL WILL THRIVE !!!!!! The NHL lost here because of the Atlanta STUPIDLAIRS group, a bunch of Drunk Pantywastes who are LIARS of the Highest order, nothing more.... nothing Less.
In Cobb, the NHL Knights would thrive lik never before, ut I still laugh that the Thrashers are in a MINOR LEAGUE town, in a MINOR LEAGUE building !!!
Hell, Greenville,S.C. is bigger than whinereg and has a NEW building The BI-LO Center, so time for either the NHL or this WORTHLESS owner in whinerpeg to move the team BACK TO ATLANTA A.S.A.P. There is NO WAY This team will survive in that Minor league town more than 3-4 more years, then GOOD-BYE !!!!! whinerpeg DOES NOT DESERVE NHL hockey, ATLANTA DOES !
@Atlantaman I am hearing a lot of whining, but it seems to be one sided. Who are you to sit at your computer and tell me that I have No clue about the game? You are right in saying that I don't know anything about Atlanta though, I have never been. And I would recommend that if you don't like Winnipeg, quit coming back.... (I know that I would, it's really not a nice city at all. But we do love our hockey).
How do you say that the Jets are worse now, than in Atlanta??? Do you remember Their first number of seasons? Hopefully not, I know I would try to forget it too. I mean, halfway through this season, and the Jets already have more points than the Thrashers did their whole first season. They didn't go .500 until their 6th season in the NHL. The Jets aren't great by any stretch of the imagination, but they've gone +.500 both seasons so far.
The Thrashers are gone, and I really feel bad for you (being a hockey fan) but the truth is (wether it be from recession, bad ownership, etc.) that the city didn't support the team, and that's why they're gone now. I hope that one day the NHL is back in Atlanta. Hockey is a great game, and I hope that it continues to expand. But bashing Winnipeg because you lost your hockey team seems pretty poor on your part. Wipe your tears away, and pick another team to cheer for. That's what we did for 15 years.
With all that being said, lets get back to the matter at hand: PLEASE FIRE CLAUDE NOEL. It doesn't seem like the players respect him, and he doesn't even know who his lines consist of game after game. The players (for the most part) have the talent, they just need a system that works, and a respected coach who can bring it to them. Also, Claude, please take Perry Pearn with you. Game after game our special teams is terrible, and that falls on Pearn.
@Atlantaman No part of your argument holds any water. When Atlanta tried to save their team, 200 people came out to support them. That alone is laughable.
This "worthless owner" that you talk about, is worth more than 20 Billion. Even if his team was losing as much money as the Thrashers, something tells me he could afford it. But guess what, they're not. They've sold out every game in the last 3 years. Also, this "old building" you talk about was built in 2004.
You had your short lived run with an NHL team, just be happy that it lasted a whole 14 years (probably should have only been half of that).
Oh, and FYI; Winnipeg has about 200K more people than your crime infested $HITTY Fatlanta.yahoo
You forgot to mention Atlanta's 4,975,300 metro population within a 30 mile radius of the city or so.
Also, he didn't say "old building," he said "minor league building." Please don't tell me you've already forgotten about the Moose.
That being said, the day an arena gets built in Cobb - NHL, AHL, whatever, I'm gone. Not only do I get to subsidize a slightly barely above average baseball team who are owned by a multi-billion dollar company (ooh, personal!), I'd get to subsidize an arena built for people who could afford it themselves. Hell no.
I miss the Thrashers. I miss going to games. But this whole "Atlanta vs. Winnipeg" thing is inane. You want to be mad at someone? Get pissed off at Atlanta Spirit for being the worst owners in sports. They've about half killed the Atlanta Hawks.
The original Jets never should've left Winnipeg, but then our team would've moved to QC and Thrashers fans would be hating on the Nordiques. Just admit that being a Thrashers fan gives you a unique perspective on the situation (which is basically a continuation of Atlanta somehow) on the ice with the Jets, but you don't have to bash either city over the situation.
Claude Noel is the Jets' John Anderson. Anderson had a two year shelf life; Noel'll get two and a half at best.
@hildymac Hope that you're right about Noel's expiration date. And I stand corrected on the population of Atlanta, but that supports my argument that much more. 10 Atlantas couldn't have supported the team, it's just not a hockey market. But at least there's the Braves, I'm sure Baseball is fun to some people...
