Is it just us, or has the start of this NHL season featured a ridiculous number of brutal and unnecessary hits to the head? You can add another one to the list as Florida's Jesse Winchester landed a flying elbow on Boston's Chris Kelly.
As awful as this hit is, it might be worse that there wasn't a penalty called on the play. Winchester sees Kelly, lines him up, jumps and extends his elbow directly into the Boston forward's face. The puck wasn't there (as if Winchester could even pretend he was playing it had it been) and there's a clear intent to injure.
Ugly play. We imagine Winchester will be hearing from Shanahan shortly.
