NHL finally releases the 2013-14 schedule

The NHL has finally released their schedule for the 2013-14 season. In addition to releasing their schedule, the NHL also revealed the names for the four new divisions created by the league's new alignment. The NHL also finalized all of their planned outdoor games as well as their plan to participate in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi.

Let's get the new division names out of the way first. Your four new division names are: Pacific, Central, Atlantic and Metropolitan. Everything seems to be in order … wait. Metropolitan? Sounds like a perfect division name for Carolina and Columbus.

On to hockey. The regular season begins on Tuesday, October 1st. The regular season concludes on Sunday, April 13th. The NHL will continue their tradition of hockey near Thanksgiving with a matinee between the Rangers and Bruins on November 29th.

Are you ready for some outdoor games? We hope so, because several are coming your way. The Winter Classic on January 1st will be played in Michigan Stadium and will feature Detroit and Toronto. Outdoor games will also be played in Dodger Stadium (Anahaeim vs. LA), two in Yankee Stadium (Rangers vs. Devils and Rangers vs. Islanders), Soldier Field (Pittsburgh vs. Chicago) and one in BC Place (Ottawa vs. Vancouver). We've already debated the number of outdoor games on the schedule, but here they are in all of their controversial glory.

The Olympic break will take place between February 9th and February 25th. NHL players will be allowed to compete for their countries in the quest for a gold medal.
