NHL previews Stadium Series at Yankee Stadium

Like it or not, the NHL is going to be hosting six outdoor games in 2014. Two of these games will take place in Yankee Stadium and will feature the New York Rangers. The first will take place on January 26th between the Devils and Rangers and then three days later the Rangers will battle the Islanders.

Whether you're in favor of the NHL hosting so many outdoor games in a season or if you believe they're saturating a good thing, you have to admit that Yankee Stadium looks like a great hockey venue.

Gary Bettman was in attendance and made some comments on the upcoming Stadium Series.

As seen on CBS, Bettman said,

To take this wonderful, iconic venue and do something that’s never been done in it before, play hockey games, we thought would be a lot of fun.

Not exactly the most insightful comments, but it's a true statement. What you won't hear from Bettman is how profitable the Stadium Series will be for the NHL. Aside from ticket sales, the NHL will cash in on a plethora of merchandise sold specifically for the outdoor games. The objective is to take the success of the Winter Classic and duplicate it five more times in 2013-14.

The Stadium Series will start with the Winter Classic on January 1st, 2014 at Michigan Stadium. It continues with an outdoor game in Dodger Stadium before two outdoor games are held in Yankee Stadium. The series wraps up with a game in Soldier Field on March 1st and the Heritage Classic in BC Place on March 2nd.
