Did the Flames turn down a huge offer for Jay Bouwmeester?

The Calgary Flames traded Jay Bouwmeester to the St. Louis Blues a little over one year ago. In exchange, the Flames received a conditional first-round pick, Mark Cundari and goaltender Reto Berra. The trade was supposed to begin the rebuilding effort in Calgary, but many believed the Blues escaped with a nice asset for an extremely manageable price.

It turns out that the Flames may have turned down an offer which in hindsight would have been a huge boost for the organization.

Wow. Granted we are looking at this potential deal with 20-20 hindsight, it’s still pretty incredible. If true, it really speaks to the dysfunction in the Flames’ front office. Nyquist and Tatar have blossomed into two dynamic NHL skaters, but apparently no one in the Calgary front office recognized that and instead went with Cundari and Berra. How has that worked out? Not well.

This type of report would be painful for any NHL team, but it’s especially bad for the Flames who are stuck in a slow rebuild. The Flames have been ridiculed for not cashing in on their assets and this report only confirms that notion.
