Mike Modano is expecting big things from Tyler Seguin

Most hockey fans know that Tyler Seguin is a rising star in the NHL. At 22, Seguin already has an 84-point campaign under his belt and it seems like the best is yet to come. Though it seems like the only Seguin detractors are Bruins fans, it’s still interesting to hear analysis on the young skater from respected NHL veterans.

Here’s what Mike Modano told The Dallas Morning News about Seguin and whether or not the current Stars forward will best Modano’s mark for most points in franchise history:

“He has the tools to do it. Having (Jason) Spezza will certainly help, but just having Jamie (Benn) means that both should be in that discussion. They both have that ability, and they push each other pretty hard. You get a good power play, and who knows what can happen. There will be a time when he’s pushing 100, and that could be this season.”

Is Modano’s mark of 93 points which he set in 1993-94 destined to fall?

The Stars are a popular pick to be a contender in the West and Seguin is often included in the conversation as a player who should benefit the most from the recent infusion of talent in Dallas. Seguin was outstanding last season, scoring 37 goals and obliterating his previous career-high point total (67) by 17. Is the best yet to come?

Modano’s prediction is a pretty solid one, assuming Seguin stays healthy. The youngster may not crack the franchise record in 2014-15, but it feels safe to pencil him in for another 80+ point year given the new talent around him. We’re not totally convinced Spezza will be able to live up to the hype, but we think he will assist in removing some of the pressure off of Seguin’s shoulders.
