What goes into this ranking? Shot attempts for percentage, offensive/defensive zone starts, goals for percentage and puck luck are the elements of this analytic power ranking. Last week’s NHL Analytics Power Rankings on Puck Drunk Love can be found here. Keep in mind that based on the 2013-14 NHL season, 13 out of 16 playoff teams ranked in the top 16 of these same analytics power rankings.

Nov 24th power rank

Largest change in power ranking from last week: On a positive note the Winnipeg Jets moved up a whopping eight spots from last weeks ranking. They have managed to move up this far despite still being below the league average puck luck rating. On the flip side Montreal’s luck is starting to take a turn for the worse as they also dropped eight spots in these rankings.

Teams currently outside the playoffs in points but in the top 16 of the rankings: Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers, Washington Capitals, New Jersey Devils, Dallas Stars and the Carolina Hurricanes.

Teams currently in the playoffs based on points but outside of the top 16 in the rankings: Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, San Jose Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Winnipeg Jets.

Three teams with the most luck: Nashville Predators (3.5), Pittsburgh Penguins (2.8) and the Calgary Flames (2.4).

Three teams with the least luck:  Edmonton Oilers (-3.7), Columbus Blue Jackets (-2.9) and the Carolina Hurricanes (-2.3).

Biggest change in power ranking based on luck: Both the Oilers and Capitals would move up three spots in the power rankings if they had average luck. While all three of the Rangers, Flames and Senators would drop two spots in the power ranking if they luck was average.
