Report: 2016 Winter Classic will be held in Boston

The NHL hasn’t officially named the location for the 2016 Winter Classic, but a new report has surfaced suggesting it will be held in Boston. Bob McKenzie reported this news during the TSN’s Insider Trading segment and he also discussed the other outdoor games the league will play in 2015-16.

In the TSN segment, McKenzie details that Boston will be the home of the 2016 Winter Classic and fans should expect a formal announcement in either January or February of 2015.

In addition to the Winter Classic, the NHL will also host three other outdoor games. The 2016 Heritage Classic will reportedly be hosted by the Winnipeg Jets. Two Stadium Series games will be played as well, one in Minnesota and the other in Colorado.

The location of the 2016 Winter Classic is going to draw some mixed reactions from fans. Obviously Boston Bruins fans will enjoy the news, but those hoping for a bit more diversity for the Classic will be disappointed. Boston last hosted the Classic in 2010 at Fenway Park. Since its inception in 2008, the Classic has been played by the same group of teams. Many fans are longing for some new faces and new locations (say, other than the East Coast) to serve as the home of the Winter Classic.
