Sean Avery quit an off-Broadway play due to a pizza dispute

We try to keep our focus at PDL on the ice, but every now and then a story comes along involving a former player which is so bizarre we can’t help but throw a few words in its direction. Sean Avery is a former player we’ve covered at length due to his various quotes and actions, but the headline of this article should clue you in that Avery has reached a new level. According to the New York Post, Avery quit his own off-Broadway play due to an argument over pizza.

Here’s what apparently went down prior to Avery’s departure just two days before the show was supposed to open:

On Monday, Avery left rehearsals early after growing agitated. On Tuesday, Avery’s behavior grew worse. According to Smith-Sloman, when a young assistant stage manager named Natalie asked the athlete-turned-actor if he wanted a slice of pizza, he said no, but somehow thought the assistant had called him an “a–hole.”

“He said I was ‘talking s–t’ and said I was ‘so full of s–t,’” Natalie, who was left in tears, told us. “That’s when I realized that I was dealing with a madman.”

So … how did Avery confuse the word “pizza” with “a-hole” during this whole thing? Even for a guy like Avery, that seems like a pretty avoidable argument. We’re guessing Avery is pretty familiar with his obscenities.

Avery was supposed to play the lead character’s best friend, but now an understudy will take his place following the former NHL skater’s epic meltdown. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like anyone was able to record Avery’s tirade, much to the chagrin of hockey fans everywhere.

Yes, we secretly love the fact we were granted the opportunity to roll out Avery’s horrifying profile photo once again.
