Elisha Cuthbert joins Goon sequel

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting actress Elisha Cuthbert is joining the sequel to the 2011 Canadian-American hit comedy Goon. The original Goon was a critical and box-office hit about the life as an enforcer for a minor league hockey player. The film was wildly successful in Canada, grossing more than $3 million. The movie starred Sean William Scott, Liev Schreiber, Jay Baruchel and Allison Pill – all of whom are set to reprise their roles in the sequel.

Baruchel, a lifelong Montreal Canadiens fan, is set to make his directorial debut for the film. The film, like it’s predecessor, will be written by Baruchel with new writing partner Jesse Chabot.

The sequel is currently titled Goon: Last of the Enforcers, so it will be interesting to see how that story parallels the current NHL’s trend of the enforcer breed dying. With Baruchel being a pretty knowledgeable hockey fan, it’s more than likely.

Here’s more details from the report.

“Scott is once again playing playing hockey enforcer Doug “the Thug” Glatt in a story that sees his team, the Halifax Highlanders, reunite with a host of new players during a pro lockout.”

Cuthbert is no stranger to comedies. She was arguably the best part of ABC’s Happy Endings – a show which ran for just three seasons, yet was one of the best comedy’s the network has ever produced.

A lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan, she’s regularly seen at Maple Leafs games. She’s also married to Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf and previously dated a real life goon in Sean Avery, so she may be able to draw real life experiences to her character, should her role require her to do so.

Let’s hope that many real life hockey players, including Phaneuf, make cameos in the film. The first movie was hilarious, so I’m very excited to see what Baruchel and company can do with this one.
