The Flames lock up captain Mark Giordano to a six-year deal

The Calgary Flames continued their impressive offseason today by signing captain Mark Giordano to a six-year deal worth $40.5 million, which is a 6.75 AAV per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

There’s few other ways of putting this – this is a huge win for Calgary. Giordano’s asking price was said to be close to the $8-9 million per season range, so getting him at just under $7 million is a steal. He had an amazing season in 2014-15, scoring 48 points in 61 games. If it wasn’t for a torn bicep, Giordano would have been a Norris Trophy candidate and likely would have won the award – he was that good. He passed both the eye test and the fancy stats test.

Giordano is no spring chicken at the age of 31, but signing him, even at a long-term of six years, was a huge priority for the Flames.

With the singing the Flames now have an envious defensive group. The club opted to trade for Dougie Hamilton and locked him up to a deal which will keep him with the Flames until 2021 at a reasonable $5.75 cap hit. Giordano’s defense pair T.J. Brodie is locked up to an equally exceptional contract ($4.65 per until 2020). The club also has useful D-men scattered across their bottom pairings including Dennis Wideman and Kris Russell. These moves almost make up for the stinker of a contract – an unforgivable three-year deal worth almost $3 million per that the Flames gave to Deryk Engelland.

The Flames aren’t messing around. Their playoff appearance last year might have been a surprise, but they are insuring that next year they stay the course and improve. Signing their captain to a reasonable, long-term deal will help tremendously. Things are looking up in Calgary.
