The Toronto Maple Leafs have invited Curtis Glencross to camp on a player tryout per Andrew Walker of Sportsnet 590 The Fan.
It’s a small but nice move by the Leafs.
Glencross has put up eight straight seasons of at least 10 goals split between Columbus, Edmonton, Calgary and Washington. In 2014-15, split between the Flames and Capitals, he scored 13 goals and 35 points in 71 games. He’s not an amazing possession player, but he’s a gritty winger who can score, and he’d make a nice fit on the Leafs bottom-six should he make the team.
The Leafs have done an excellent job in securing veterans on smaller deals. There’s no risk in signing Glencross to a tryout. Worst case scenario, it doesn’t work out and the team cuts him. Best case scenario, he plays well in camp and the team signs him to a one-year deal, he takes on a small role with the club and the team can deal him for draft picks at the trade deadline, should they fall out of contention.
The move is the latest of short-term low-risk deals the Leafs have made this offseason. The club has brought in P.A Parenteau, Mark Arcobello and Shawn Matthias on one-year deals, and have invited former San Jose Sharks forward Devin Setoguchi on a player tryout.
Toronto has a pretty stuffed roster, so it will be an uphill battle for Glencross to make the team. Since he’s on a PTO, it will technically be an audition for every team in the league.
