Video: New Stanley Cup commercial asks “What’s in a name?”

The NHL has released a new ad for the Stanley Cup playoffs and it asks a very simple question: What’s in a name? Liev Schreiber lends his voice to this ad which discusses names and ponders which ones will be added to the best trophy in all of sports.

The NHL has set the bar pretty high for themselves when it comes to ads. By most standards, this is a strong ad which highlights the prestige and allure of winning the Cup. Unfortunately, the NHL set a much higher bar thanks to some of their campaigns over the last several years.

Remember Cup Raise?

It’s beautiful and deserves to be in the discussion for one of the best ads in all of sports. It’d be thrilling to see this ad updated each year with the new winner, but alas, the NHL has tried new ideas instead even though it’d likely take minimal work to refresh this spot each season with the new champ.

There’s also the brilliant History Will Be Made spots which captivated the hockey community and led to countless parodies.

Where does the newest spot fit into the rankings? It falls to the great campaigns posted above, but it’s definitely better than some of the Because It’s The Cup ads fans were subjected to which were more annoying than moving.
