Islanders moving to Brooklyn proves business trumps tradition

Written by Laura Astorian on .

You’d be hard pressed to find someone who fawns over Nassau Coliseum in its current condition. It’s old, it smells funny, it leaks – it needs to be renovated from the top to the bottom and back up again. Islanders owner Charles Wang should move the team to a new building that’s deserving of a modern NHL franchise. What was good in the 70s and 80s isn’t good in the 2010s, and that isn’t just a reference to the Islanders’ record, either. It’s time for an upgrade in arena.

Unfortunately for Islanders fans, that arena upgrade was never going to happen at its present location. It was just a matter of time until the team relocated, but where? Would the once-proud franchise leave to go to Kansas City? Seattle? Quebec? No. It would go someplace closer, somewhere very different compared to its current home. It would go to Brooklyn.

Video: President Obama comments on the NHL lockout

Written by David Rogers on .

Barack Obama appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Wednesday night and was asked a series of questions about the economy, foreign policy and the debates he recently had against Mitt Romney. Later in the show questions were pulled in from Facebook, one of which asked Obama to "pull some strings" to end the NHL lockout.

Solid answer, Mr. President. Obama reminds the owners and players that they make money because of fan support, concluding that the two sides should be able to "figure this out". He ended with a "get this done".

The question came from a "Mike in Los Angeles". Great question, Mike. It was fun to see the President respond to an issue that has been troubling hockey fans for the past couple months.

Jaromir Jagr comments on the NHL lockout

Written by David Rogers on .

Jaromir Jagr is not your typical hockey player. While most players are primarily focused on what takes place on the ice, Jagr is also deeply involved in the business side of the game as the owner of HC Kladno, a team in the Czech Extraliga.

Based on this business background, Jagr has a different opinion on the current NHL lockout and has voiced some strong opinions about how the NHL owners are handling the situation.

Bruins' Marc Savard: No return anytime soon

Written by Laura Astorian on .

It's hard to see a player be out for an extended period of time for any reason, but the story of Marc Savard is especially painful. Concussed on a nasty hit by Matt Cooke on March 7th, 2010, and further concussed by Matt Hunwick the following January, Savard has hit roadblock after roadblock in his attempts to come back to the NHL. Monday over Twitter, Savard shared some of his personal thoughts.

Ovechkin shatters KHL glass with his head

Written by David Rogers on .

Alex Ovechkin is known for delivering some pretty big hits in the NHL. However, few rival the crushing blow his head delivered on an unsuspecting piece of KHL glass this weekend.

After delivering a rather innocent check, Ovechkin's momentum carried him backward into the boards. The end result? Ovechkin's head - 1, pane of glass - 0. Thankfully, it appears no one in attendance was injured as there wasn't any seating right on top of the boards as we're accustomed to seeing in the NHL.

The video, as seen in Reddit Hockey and uploaded on the KHL's YouTube page, also shows that the KHL does things a bit differently in regards to their coverage. Following the hit Ovechkin leaves the ice and heads to the dressing room. Normally, that's where we're used to the video ending. Instead, we see Ovechkin removing equipment in the dressing room and having his hand worked on. Eat your heart out, NHL 24/7.

Luongo to Toronto rumors continue to swirl

Written by David Rogers on .

Please, someone end the lockout simply so that we don't have to ponder Roberto Luongo's future any further. Luongo's time is all but officially over in Vancouver. It has been since the 2011-12 season when Cory Schneider climbed past the weathered veteran, making Luongo one incredibly expensive benchwarmer.

Even as the lockout persists, rumors are still creeping up about where Luongo will go next. All signs are pointing to Toronto but will that truly be Luongo's next home?

NHL cancels games through November 1st

Written by David Rogers on .

One day after the NHL all but completely ignored three new offers from the NHLPA, the league has announced they are cancelling games through November 1st. This second wave of canceled games will bring the total of games removed from the schedule to 135 (Source).

Hope remains that an 82-game season will still pan out but with the NHL back to canceling games and brushing seemingly negotiable deals aside, are larger cancellations lurking in the near future?

Gary Bettman, NHL "disappointed" in three NHLPA CBA offers

Written by Laura Astorian on .

The NHL and NHLPA met today to discuss the NHL's newest CBA offer. What exactly is in the proposed NHL CBA, you might ask? Things such as the players' share being cut down to 50% from 57%, a contract cap at five years and a revenue sharing pool coming from the top 10 teams and going to the other 20. Obviously, the big sticking point is going to be the decrease in salaries. The players would like the league to honor the contracts that they had signed prior to the end of the current CBA, but the decrease in revenue as well as a salary cap of just $59.9 million makes the league doing so fully very unlikely.

Discussing expansion in the NHL

Written by David Rogers on .

It seems silly to talk about expansion in the NHL considering the league is enjoying its second stoppage in nine years. It seems foolish to even hint at the topic considering the recent issues that have arisen in locations like Atlanta and the continually discussed situation in Phoenix. Reports have indicated that numerous franchises are in dangerous financial territory.

Except this is the NHL. You can take logic and common sense and throw it out the window. An article from NESN.com indicates that the league might be planning to expand in the very near future and could be preparing to tackle such an issue as soon as the lockout ends.
