Martin Brodeur has officially retired from the NHL. His on-ice career netted him a total of 691 wins. As impressive as that number is, some lamented the fact he wasn’t able to reach the 700-win plateau. How does Brodeur feel about the fact he came up nine wins short? He blames the lockouts.

Brodeur’s quote was probably the best moment of the press conference. He has a pretty strong point too. Brodeur’s career started in 1991-92. There was the strike in 1992 which may have played a partial role, but the big story is that Brodeur endured three separate lockouts (1994-95, 2004-05 and 2012-13). Remove those, or even one of those stoppages, and Brodeur’s win total is well over 700.
