The Week’s Boxing Schedule, Featuring Anthony Dirrell And Tomoki Kameda

Foxy boxing! Get it? They’re foxes and they’re bo-

Anyway, the boxing schedule: it’s pretty chill ahead of next’s week’s big fight (or should that be “big fight” — I don’t think I’ve ever experienced so little buzz for a Floyd Mayweather show). Anyway, there are a few cards on, though only two of them are on US TV.

  • Anthony Dirrell vs. Marco Antonio Rubio, Saturday, CBS, Corpus Christi Tex. The biggest fights of the week are once again via Al Haymon and “Premier Boxing Champions.” This time the main event is somewhat lacklustre, with super middleweight Dirrell (27-1-1, 22 KO) taking on veteran trial horse/fringe contender Rubio (59-7-1, 51 KO) in an effort to get his career back on track after dropping a decision to Badou Jack. Dirrell should be more than dynamic enough to deal with the hard punching but limited Mexican. The better fight is on the undercard, with Japanese bantamweight Tomoki Kameda (31-1, 19 KO) hoping to square the ledger with England’s Jamie McDonnell (26-2-1, 12 KO), who climbed off the canvas to win their first outing by razor-thin unanimous decision. That first fight was a lot of fun, and I don’t see why the rematch should be any different.
  • Diego De La Hoya vs Jesus Ruiz, Thursday, Estrella TV, Los Angeles. Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions’ club fight dream continues on Estrella after being dumped by Fox Deportes in favour of Al Haymon. This week’s show is headlined by the big man himself’s cousin, Diego (11-0, 7 KO). He’s taking on Mexico’s Jesus Ruiz (34-6-5, 23 KO) in a development-type fight.
  • Juergen Braehmer vs Konni Konrad, Friday, Dresden. Noted chrome dome and German light heavyweight Braehmer (46-2, 34 KO) meets unheralded Montenegrin Konrad (22-1-1, 11 KO) in a fight that I suppose you could track down if you really wanted to.
