The Week’s Boxing Schedule, Featuring Not Much Of Note

For the first time in what seems like ages, there’s no high-level boxing on this weekend. So make like the bear and chill this weekend. Unless the bear is watching boxing, in which case he’s going to be disappointed. Anyway, here’s the boxing schedule for the week, such as it is.

  • Vyacheslav Shabranskyy vs Paul Parker, Tuesday, Fox Sports 1/Fox Deportes, Philadelphia. Soon Golden Boy’s Fox Sports shows will go the way of the dodo, which I don’t think anyone’s really that upset about. Here we have a touted Ukrainian proscpect in Shabranskyy (13-0, 11 KO) taking on midwestern clubfighter Parker (7-0, 4 KO), in a cruiserweight bout that seems unlikely to be competitive.
  • Gilberto Gonzalez vs John Karl Sosa, Thursday, Fox Deportes, LA. Puerto Rican junior welterweight Sosa (13-0, 6 KO) fights Mexican journeyman Gonzalez (24-3, 20 KO) on another Golden Boy club show. Featherweight prospect Diego De La Hoya—cousin of Oscar—shares the bill.
  • David Carmona vs Warlito Parrenas, Saturday,  beIN Sports Español, Piedras Negras Mexico. Junior bantamweights Carmona (19-2-4, 8 KO) and Parrenas (24-6, 21 KO) in a fight mainly notable for one of its participants sound like a Filipino version of Wario.
  • Ramon Alvarez vs Richard Gutierrez, Saturday, UniMas, Tepic Mexico. Junior middleweight Alvarez (21-4-2, 13 KO), notable mainly for being the brother of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, stays busy against Gutierrez (28-6-1, 17 KO), who has lost five of his last six.
