Inside the boxscore: UAB 47, SMU 28

1. SMU scored the fewest (28) points in Conference USA history. The previous low was 36, was had been established when UAB lost to Southern Miss in 2002. The Mustangs scored their fewest ever first half points (12) and had their lowest output since the beginning of the shot clock era. Prior to that you have to go back to 1956 to find a game when they scored less (26).
2. There were zero points scored on either side on fast breaks. Both teams are coached by ex Big Six conference coaches - UAB by Mike Davis (Indiana) and SMU by Matt Doherty (UNC) - and both teams play at one of the slowest tempos in the nation. SMU is 343rd (of 345) and UAB is 325th. This game had 54 possessions, which is significantly below even SMU standard of 59.3.
3. The Mustangs only turned the ball over 7 times (13% TO rate). Typically, they turn the ball over on 21% of their possessions, so it was a good night for ball control. The Miustangs have averaged 1.21 points per effective possession (one where they actually attempt a shot or get fouled). But on Wednesday they had 47 effective possessions and scored 28 points (0.60), or half their typical rate. Part of this is due to taking 63% of their shots from beyond the arc, and having a 10.3% 3-pt FG% for the game.
4. SMU scored 9 of their points from the free throw line, which represented 32.1% of their scoring. For the season they score 20.4% of their points from the line. Freshman Jalen Jones scored all six of his points on free throws.
5. UAB is an average team in terms of generating assists. For the season they assist on 54.8% of made baskets, which is 148th nationally. But against SMU the Blazers recorded 13 assists on just 15 made baskets (86.7%) This is the 2nd consecutive game in which UAB has made 15 field goals, and in both games they attempted 44 shots. But in their previous game, against Memphis, they only recored 9 assists (60%).
