1. FSU (20-9, 11-4) has now won 11 conference games for the 2nd year in a row and the 4th time overall. This is FSU’s 20th season in the ACC, and they’ve reached double digit conference victories six times, including the past four straight. If FSU beats Clemson this weekend they will finish with 12 ACC wins for only the second time. It will also guarantee that FSU loses no more than 11 games for the 4th straight season.
2. Little noted during the telecast, Michael Snaer extended three FSU possessions with offensive boards. This is notable as Virginia allows fewer offensive rebounds than 342 of 345 Division I schools. Snaer grabbed a missed 3-pointer by Luke Loucks early in the game and scored. In the 2nd half he rebounded a Deivdas Dulkys missed three which led to an Xavier Gibson score. And immediately following the ejection of Bernard James, Snaer corralled an Ian Miller miss and got fouled going to the basket. He made both free throws, which made for six total points due to his rebounding.
3. FSU had 18 turnovers in a 62 possession game. FSU fans are hopeful that the team’s success in recent years is leading to more offensively polished recruits. By the eye test, that certainly appears to be the case, and by the turnover test 15 of 18 turnovers were committed by seniors. The other players played 73 minutes and committed just three.
4. The Seminoles led the ACC in 3-pt% the entire conference season until Virginia Tech caught them this past weekend. The Noles had made just 13-51 (25.5%) in their three previous games. For the first 32 minutes of the Virginia game it appeared as if FSU would continue down that path. At that point they had made 2-9 (22%). Then roommates Ian Miller and Deividas Dulkys changed that. FSU made 5-7 3s in the final 8 minutes to finish at 43.8% for the game. It was the 7th time in ACC play that the Noles have made at least 40%.
5. Mike Scott showed again why he deserves serious consideration for ACC Player of the Year. He made 9-15 shots, 10-11 FTs, and had a double-double with 10 rebounds. He scored 47% of Virginia’s points, and grabbed 48% of their rebounds.
