the Baller’s Almanac: September 14, 2012

Four years ago today, Tom Lagarde released a video which was a parody of the McCain/Palin campaign. The former UNC Tar Heel center from the 70's, who now lives and operates a ballroom in Saxapahaw, NC, titled the video The Original Mavericks for Truth. The video plays off his professional career as a member of the Dallas Mavericks.

Larry Brown, the current head coach of the SMU Mustangs, turns 72 today. Born in Brooklyn, the 5-9 point guard starred at North Carolina for both Frank McGuire and Dean Smith. While there he played a large role in escalating the bad blood which fuels the UNC-Duke rivalry. On February 4th, 1961 the Duke and UNC freshmen game had featured multiple fights, and after ejections UNC finished the game with only three players on the floor. The heat carried over to the varsity game, where Duke All-American Art Heyman first got in trouble for shoving a fan, and then late in the game he fouled Brown hard as he drove for a layup. Brown came up swinging, setting off a melee.

Following a ten-year professional career, Brown has spent  the last 40 years as a coach – he's coached at four universities and for ten professional teams.
