Cal upsets ‘Cuse to head to 2K Sports final against Texas

The 2K Sports Classic will have an interesting final this Friday night with the 10th ranked Texas Longhorns facing off against the upstart California Golden Bears. Cal pulled off a nice upset of the 23rd ranked Syracuse Orange 73-59 Thursday evening while the Longhorns defeated Iowa soundly, 71-57.

It was expected that Texas would be facing off with ‘Cuse in the final, but the Golden Bears had other plans for that as they started fast, taking a 34-22 lead at the half. In the second half, it became the Jordan Matthews show as the sophomore guard dropped 20 of his 22 points to maintain Cal’s lead in a game that never was in doubt. Jabari Bird helped with 16 points and David Kravish filled out the stat sheet with 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. Michael Gbinije led Syracuse with 13 points.

They’ll go up against a tough Texas team that routed the Hawkeyes 71-57. Trailing by twelve early in the first period and by six at the half, the Longhorns stormed out to a 47-27 second half with Jonathan Holmes adding 17 of his 19 points in the final period. The Longhorns are the early favorite, but it’s clear that this will be a difficult game for both Texas and California and the winner will need to play exceptionally to earn the victory.

It’s still not too late for fans to fly into the Big Apple and see their teams play, with flights available from Hipmunk.
