Jim Larranaga plans on coaching well into his 70’s

When Jim Larranaga took the Miami job many speculated that he was coming in to quickly turn the program around before he retired. After all, he'll be 64 when this season begins, and he has over 40 years of coaching in his rear view window.

But today the Hurricanes have announced an extension that will keep him in Coral Gables until 2022.

In his two years at Miami he's already led them to their first ever ACC Championship (and their only winning conference seasons as well). Now most of Frank Haith's players are out of the system, and he's put together a team which he has recruited.

The extension is well deserved, but it also serves as a recruiting tool, as his age was being used against him on the trail.

Of course, the ACC is a bit of an old man's league, with three guys older than Larranaga. But Jim Boeheim, Mike Krzyzewski, and Leonard Hamilton are all safe in their contracts, so the Canes needed to do the same with Larranaga.
