Charting Time on Ice – November

After a fantastic October, the month of November took a horrible turn as the Stars were once again ravaged by injuries. Six players missed substantial time in November so the numbers will be skewed for a few guys, especially on the special teams as Alex Goligoski and Brenden Morrow missed some time.

A few young guys also got called up from the Texas Stars and got good amounts of ice time and they’ll continue to see time well into the month of December.

There were 11 games in October while Dallas saw the ice 13 games in November. The Stars also played one more overtime game this month.

The stats below are only for the month of November unless noted otherwise. For the power-play and shorthanded times, I’ve put in their times for November with the season totals in parenthesis.

GP = Games Played            TOI = Time on ice          TOI/G = Time on ice per game

PP TOI = Power-play time on ice              SH TOI = Shorthanded time on ice

  • Steve Ott missed six games in November but managed to average the exact same amount of ice time.
  • Jamie Benn saw a big spike in his time on the penalty-kill (13 minutes more than what he had in October). Most of this was due to the Stars penalty woes as they were near the top of the list in number of penalties taken.
  • Adam Burish was getting a lot more minutes this month before his injury as he filled in for Steve Ott during the beginning of the month. With Ott healthy again, Burish should be back down in the 12 minute range. He also filled in Ott’s spot on the power-play and got himself two PP assists, his only two PP points on the season.
  • Michael Ryder found himself playing on a line with Jamie Benn and Loui Eriksson this month. His ice time didn’t change that much but his production was pretty much otherworldly compared to October. In October, Ryder had three goals and an assist in 11 games. In November, he had six goals and six assists in 13 games.
  • Radek Dvorak continues to be a leader among the forwards in penalty-kill time. He’s taken only one penalty the entire season so that helps to keep him out on the ice.
  • Injury issues also put Tomas Vincour into the spotlight as he got time with the top lines. He’s played hard and done a pretty good job. He’s just had a bit of trouble getting onto the score sheet.
  • Erik Nystrom has been incredible this month. He’s been the leading goal scorer for the Stars this month with seven goals with two assists to boot. It might be time to give him some looks on the man-advantage with the PP struggling so bad.
  • Somehow, the replacement for the Alex Goligoski on the power-play was Toby Petersen. I’m going to go ahead and say that plan failed as Petersen failed to record a single point with the man-advantage. Glen Gulutzan needs to find a different answer to man the point. Petersen was averaging the least amount of minutes among all Stars forwards in October but injuries put him into a much more important position in November.

  • Goligoski was averaging about 21:30 minutes per game until his injury. He played only six minutes in the game he was injured in.
  • With the Goligoski injury, the big bump in minutes went to Nick Grossman. Grossman averaged about 3 more minutes per game and saw a substantial bump in time on the penalty-kill. He played only 17:43 of PK time in October. That shot up to 39:17 for the month of November, the most among all defensemen on the team.
  • Philip Larsen was called up to the team when Goligoski was injured but he didn’t see any ice time for four games. His first game this month was on Nov. 21. He and Toby Peterson were replacements for Goligoski on the power-play. Larsen’s numbers were bumped up because of a game against the Phoenix Coyotes. The Stars suffered injuries to three guys (including Trevor Daley) in that game and were beaten 3-0. Larsen played 25:50 in that game, which didn’t go into overtime. It’s the most he’s ever played at this level.
  • Mark Fistric played in all but one game but he didn’t average a lot of ice time.
