2013-14 Game 54: Stars lose 3-2 to Devils in OT

Final OT

Dallas 2 – New Jersey 3

1st Period:

10:59 – Dainius Zubrus (10)
Assists: Jaromir Jagr(29), Marek Zidlicky(21)

  • This was easily the worst the Stars have looked for the last two weeks. They allowed the Devils to take the front foot and struggled to get into the game for nearly 15 minutes. Dallas had a absolutely useless 5-on-3 in the first five minutes of the game and allowed more chances that they had themselves.
  • The Devils goal was a Zubrus one-timer from the top of the right circle that went past a screened Lehtonen.
  • Dallas managed a whopping two shots in the first 16 minutes of the period. They ended up with just four total shots by the end of the first. It was tough sledding to start the game today.
  • Ryan Garbutt took a puck to the knee blocking a shot on the PK and was in severe pain for a while. He returned to the game though and looked alright.

2nd Period:

9:50 – Travis Zajac (9) (Power Play)
Assists: Damien Brunner(8), Patrik Elias(21)

10:52 – Jamie Benn (21)
Assists: Tyler Seguin(29), Valeri Nichushkin(15)

  • Kari made a huge save in the first four minutes of the period. During a 4-on-4, he made a sprawling, diving stop on Zajac. It probably should’ve been 2-0 but Kari was there for a game-saving stop.
  • Dallas had an excellent stretch of hockey eight minutes into the period. They had some sustained pressure and put some shots on Schneider but Ryan Garbutt ended up taking a really stupid interference penalty in the offensive zone. The Devils immediately capitalized on that and scored a PPG.
  • Jamie Benn was able to quickly peg that goal back with a nice backhander past Schneider. Nichushkin did some nice work along the right-hand boards and used the ref to pick a defenseman before passing it to the middle. Seguin missed his shot and Benn was able to clean it up.

3rd Period:

19:08 – Tyler Seguin (24)
Assists: Erik Cole (11), Alex Chiasson (16)

  • There really wasn’t too much to say about this period until the final minute. The Devils put in their patented trap defense and the Stars could barely do anything out there.
  • Tyler Seguin scored with 50 seconds left in the game on a wild scramble in front of the net after Jagr and Jamie Benn each took a penalty. It was a mad mass of humanity and somehow Seguin found the puck and blasted it by Schneider.

Overtime:

0:40 – Patrik Elias (10) (Power Play)
Assists: Travis Zajac (18), Jaromir Jagr (30)

  • Things got off to a terrible start in OT when Benn got out of the penalty box and then immediately took a tripping penalty. Patrik Elias only needed 12 seconds to put the game winner past Lehtonen.

Other Observations:

  • Fans have to be at least content that the Stars were able to get a loser point out of this game. They weren’t at their best tonight and a lot of luck was involved in that game tying goal.
  • After that 40+ shot game, Dallas only managed 16 shots tonight.
  • Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin continue to put points on the board. Seguin had a goal and an assist while Benn had a goal.
  • Val had 18:10 of ice time tonight, his most since Jan. 4 and the first time he’s had more than 14:02 of ice time since Jan. 9.
