Game 55 Recap: Stars Shutout Ducks 2-0

Final

Dallas 2 – Anaheim 0

1st Period:

No scoring

  • Cody Eakin suffered an injury in the first minute when he took a puck to the face. Dan Ellis was clearing the puck from behind the net and sent it flying along the boards. The puck ended up hitting Eakin and he was immediately out of the game.
  • Aside from that, there was very little to this period. Each team had some power-play chances but couldn’t convert.
  • Goligoski and Perry got into a scuffle along the boards but nothing came of it.
  • Dallas outshot Anaheim 9-5 in this period.

2nd Period:

5:03 – Trevor Daley (4)
Assists: Cody Eakin (15), Rich Peverley (19)

  • Cody Eakin made his return to the bench for the start of this period. He had some fresh stitches above his eye and looked otherwise fine.
  • Eakin made his presence felt as he was instrumental in the Stars goal. He had the puck along the right-side boards and powered his way to the net before shooting it on net. Daley was able to clean up and score off the rebound.
  • Mark Fistric stayed out with a lower-body injury in this period after suffering the injury in the first.
  • Seguin had a great chance around the 10-minute mark when he in on a breakaway. His attempt went wide though.
  • Dallas once again outshot the Ducks, this time 12-8

3rd Period:

19:31 – Jamie Benn (22) (Empty Net)
Assist: Tyler Seguin (30)

  • Chiasson hit the post in the opening five minutes of the period, the second hit post for Dallas in this game.
  • Dallas played mostly defensive hockey in this period just trying to preserve the lead.
  • Things got dicey in the end but Dallas was able to hang on and Jamie Benn put in the empty-net dagger.

Other Observations:

  • Ellis was fantastic tonight. He made some huge saves and gets his first shutout since Feb. 1 of 2013, exactly one year ago.
  • This was also the first time the Ducks have been shutout this season.
  • Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin were just barely able to keep their points streaks alive with Benn’s empty netter. Benn has points in six straight and Seguin has points in five straight.
  • Ray Whitney only had nine minutes of ice time tonight, his lowest of the season, and he didn’t record a shot.
