Coldplay drummer thought Johnny Football nickname was Manziel’s real name

Besides Peyton Manning, Cam Newton and Coldplay with a dash of Beyonce and Bruno Mars, Johnny Manziel’s name rang the loudest surrounding the 50th Super Bowl.

Or is it Johnny Football?

Apparently Coldplay, though tasked with playing the biggest Super Bowl halftime performance of all time, wasn’t exactly in the loop about all things Johnny Football. Or Manziel. Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com shared the nugget:

Whoops, right? Manziel is the biggest name in the NFL outside of the Super Bowl participants right now thanks to his recent off-field issues. His NFL future looks like it won’t leave limbo anytime soon, though at this point that is the least of his concerns. It’s why after the game Super Bowl MVP Von Miller sent a “message” for Manziel about fighting through his off-field issues like Miller did, according to Art Stapleton of the Record.

Alas, Manziel fans can rest at ease. While one could argue not knowing Manziel’s real name is almost like not understanding who Tim Tebow was at the “height” of his NFL career, it’s not like NFL players had much of an idea who Coldplay was. Just ask Larry Stone of the Seattle Times, who tried to talk with Denver Broncos corner Aqib Talib about the band:

So no, Coldplay certainly isn’t the only one at fault here.

Manziel, Johnny Football to some, won’t see his name fade from the spotlight anytime soon. This is the latest example, and also a clear sign that the Super Bowl once again acts as the ultimate way to bring folks with little in common together. It’s a melting pot of commercials, actors, musicians, superstars and, well, Johnny Football.

All these years later, Tebow saw his name brought up plenty of times Sunday. Manziel, for better or worse, might have the same name recognition down the road, too. Or maybe Johnny Football will. Just don’t ask the halftime performers.
