Baltimore Orioles pitcher Kevin Gausman, the fourth overall pick in the 2012 draft, has a bizarre ritual during games – he eats powdered donuts. Specifically, Gausman eats one donut before taking the mound, and four between each inning. Gausman's preferred brand of powdered donut was Hostess, and he was distraught when the company shut down last year.
But when he arrived to his locker yesterday at Orioles Spring Training in Sarasota, Gausman came across a surprise courtesy of teammate Adam Jones: a massive supply of powdered donuts. Gausman was looking into qutting the habit this year, but the supply of approximately 1700 donuts that Jones has provided him with will probably keep his ritual moving forward this year.
The 22-year old Gausman had a 3.60 ERA in 15 innings last year for Baltimore's low-A club in Aberdeen and high-A club in Frederick, striking out 13 while walking one. Baseball America ranked him as the second best prospect in Baltimore's organization (behind only uber-prospect Dylan Bundy), and he's expected to start the year in AA Bowie, possibly reaching the majors by the end of the season.
