2016 Stanley Cup ticket prices drop

The Pittsburgh Penguins (2-1) take on the San Jose Sharks (1-2) tonight in Game 4 of the 2016 NHL Stanley Cup Finals, and ticket prices have been noticeably cheaper than last year. According to data pulled by TicketNetwork, the average price of a Game 4 ticket is $865, compared to $996 in 2015.

Location is seen as a factor of the decline, as Chicago was the home to Game 4 in 2015, leading to an increase in ticket prices. In the past, major destination cities have had a large effect on ticket prices, sometimes pricing out the die-hard fans from attending the game.

Looking at the above data, this year’s Game 5 has seen a notable jump over the same game in 2015. Since the Penguins are one game up over the Sharks, a win tonight puts them just a game away from a Championship. Game 5 takes place in Pittsburgh, meaning the Penguins have the chance of claiming the Stanley Cup on their home ice. Fans are eager to see that happen, and are paying to get in on the action.

Oddly enough, comparing both cities to the prior year, Pittsburgh fans are seeing cheaper tickets overall than their rivals in San Jose. As an average of the entire 2016 Finals, a ticket to the “Shark Tank” will cost $923, almost 70% more than a ticket to Pittsburgh. Not quite as high as it was to see the Blackhawks in 2015, but still a large jump.

Ticket prices tend to increase as the teams get further into the playoffs, so a Game 7 matchup between these two elite teams could see ticket prices exceeding $1,000. Unfortunately, this cannot be compared to 2015, where the Blackhawks beat the Lightning in 2-0 in Game 6 to end the series.

There are still a limited number of tickets available to see the Pittsburgh Penguins take on the San Jose Sharks in the 2016 NHL Stanley Cup Finals. To find great seats to the game, visit our partners at TicketNetwork, and take 5% off your order with code TSD5.
