Blue Jays’ Russell Martin needed stitches after giving too hard a high five

Russell Martin is the latest ballplayer to get injured while celebrating.

Per Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling, the 33-year-old catcher split open the pinky finger on his left hand giving a high five after the Toronto Blue Jays eliminated the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 in the AL wild card game Tuesday night. Martin received stitches for the injury, but says he’s fine to play Thursday in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Texas Rangers.

That must have been one hard high-five to draw blood. Martin might want to think about swapping high fives for handshakes after games, at least until the season is over.

The Blue Jays need him against a Rangers team that was one of the best across the board in batting during the regular season.
