Browns running back Isaiah Crowell is second in the NFL with 394 rushing yards. While that hasn’t helped the Browns win any games yet, Crowell is a winner off the field in one respect.
Crowell sent the Dallas Fallen Officer Foundation $35,000, his first game check, just as he said he would when he apologized in July for posting on Instagram a photo of a masked man stabbing a police officer in the neck.
Sergeant Demetrick Pennie, president of the foundation, called Crowell and told him he didn’t have to do it, according to Cleveland.com, that he just wanted to make Crowell aware of the dangers officers face every day.
Crowell insisted, and Pennie made him an executive level sponsor.
“Isaiah is like my little brother,” Pennie said. “He’s a long-term sponsor, not necessarily in terms of money, but he’s going to be involved with my foundation, and how I engage him with my widows, and my fallen officer families.”
Pennie even called to congratulate Crowell after he ran for 133 yards, including an 85-yard touchdown, against the Ravens in Week 2. He ran for just 79 yards at Miami in Week 3, and Pennie told him he needed to have another game like he had against the Ravens. So he gained 120 yards and ran for a touchdown Sunday in Washington.
The Cowboys visit the Browns in Week 9. If Pennie is a Cowboys fan, he might take a week off from encouraging Crowell on the field.
