NFL’s 2016 fifth-year option tracker

The deadline for NFL teams to use the fifth-year option on 2013 first-round picks was late on Monday night.

Of the 32 first-round picks, 17 had their fifth-year option picked up. Another 12 had it declined, while three were no longer eligible for the option. Johnson signed a new contract, Werner was released by the Colts, and Jordan was suspended for a season—meaning his contract tolled a year.

There were no major surprises, even though five of the first 10 picks had their options declined.

Joeckel has been so disappointing in Jacksonville that the Jaguars signed offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum in free agency this offseason. Mingo put on serious weight this offseason in an attempt to resurrect his career, while Cooper was traded to New England as part of the Chandler Jones deal. Milliner has missed 27 of 48 games due to injury, and Warmack hasn’t been the all-world guard many pegged him to be.

Manuel, the only quarterback taken in the first round, had his option declined.

As expected, the only two players with 10 or more career sacks from the first round—Ansah and Richardson—had their respective options picked up. So did Reid and Trufant, the only two players from the first 32 picks with more than three interceptions.

While Patterson is the only 2013 first-rounder to make an All-Pro team, his option was declined. Long, who leads the class with three Pro Bowl selections, had his option picked up.

The fifth-year option was put in place for first-round picks after the 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
