Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has been working out with QB guru George Whitfield to prepare for the Scouting Combine.
That’s a good thing, judging by a photo of Winston which recently hit the Web. It shows a much bigger Winston than we’re used to seeing, as his belly fat seemed to hang over his shorts.
But Whitfield completely shot down the rumors about Winston possibly being out of shape.
“The photo of Jameis was taken in early-mid January,” Whitfield said, in a conversation with The Big Lead’s Jason McIntyre. “If people are saying he looks out of shape – well, did they notice he had the leash tight around his waist? That may have had something to do with it.
“Jameis is in shape and doing great. Anyone saying he’s out of shape, they can check him out at the Combine this week.”
So Whitfield is claiming the photo is one month old. And it’s certainly possible that the leash around his waist made his body look a bit more unflattering than it actually was.
Let’s not jump to conclusions here. In this situation, it’s best to ignore the social media buzz. Despite what the powers that be on Twitter and Facebook are saying: Winston is not comparable to JaMarcus Russell.
Winston is set to go under the microscope and will do his on-field workout at the Scouting Combine just one week from today. It’s highly unlikely that he’ll show up to Lucas Oil Stadium out of shape.
