Report: Dez Bryant has a hairline fracture in his knee, but could still play this week

The Dallas Cowboys feared the worst when star receiver Dez Bryant hurt his right knee against the Chicago Bears on Sunday night, but the injury doesn’t appear to be serious. He might be able to play against the San Francisco 49ers this week.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett told the San Francisco media via conference call Wednesday that Bryant has a hairline fracture in one of the bones in his knee, but it’s going to be a “day-by-day, week-by-week situation.”

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Bryant could play this week, but he could also miss three weeks, depending on how he responds to treatment this week. Bryant did not practice on Wednesday and was on crutches.

Former NFL head team doctor Dr. David Chao weighed in on Bryant’s injury via Twitter.

The Cowboys could sit Bryant against the 49ers, who rank near the bottom defensively, and try to get him back for matchups against the Cincinnati Bengals and Green Bay Packers. Although Bryant is the team’s top receiver, he has just 11 receptions for 150 yards and a touchdown through three games, as the Cowboys have relied more on their running game this season.
