It seems the Minnesota Timberwolves have narrowed down their coaching search to two candidates.
Jeff Van Gundy, the former Houston Rockets and New York Knicks coach, and Tom Thibodeau, the former Chicago Bulls coach, have emerged as the top two candidates for the Timberwolves job, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Marc Stein reported Monday.
Van Gundy is scheduled to be interviewed Monday in Cleveland, where he called Game 1 of an opening-round playoff series Sunday between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons for ESPN. Thibodeau had his interview over the weekend with Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, according to Windhorst and Stein.
Per ESPN’s report, the candidate chosen will “take over the team as coach/team president, with the ability to bring in a seasoned front-office executive to assist with day-to-day operations.”
The Timberwolves fired interim coach Sam Mitchell last Thursday. He led the team to a 29-53 record after taking over for Flip Saunders, who died in October of cancer.
