This week has been a rollercoaster ride for Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.
On Monday, head coach Jay Gruden announced that Kirk Cousins would be the team’s starting quarterback heading into their Week 1 matchup against the Dolphins, which caused many to speculate that RG3 could be released in the near future. While that remains to be seen, it’s clear that the former No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 draft is undergoing a fall from grace, and it wouldn’t be a shock if he doesn’t start a game this season (for any team).
Wednesday, however, was a better day for Griffin. He received the team’s Salute Award during their Welcome Home Luncheon for his work in the military community, according to ESPN’s John Keim.
RG3 even got a 15-second standing ovation while walking up to the stage to accept the award, and then followed that up with a 40-second speech.
“In the military, the one thing you have is your word,” Griffin said. “And when you give your word to somebody, you have to follow through. And I gave my word to my family, teammates and the military that I will always be there for them. Appreciate you guys.”
The Redskins have until Saturday at 4 p.m. ET to trim their roster down to 53 players. Griffin’s time with the team may be wearing thin, but at least he was given the opportunity to be in the spotlight one last time.
