Sammy Watkins could miss multiple games with foot injury

Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins has been ruled out of Sunday’s game at New England with a foot injury, and he could miss several more games.

According to Pro Football Talk, Bills coach Rex Ryan said there is “major concern” about Watkins’ health for the remainder of the season.

Watkins had foot surgery during the offseason and made six catches in the first two games before missing last week’s game against the Cardinals after his foot was stepped on in practice. Watkins had 15.1 yards per reception in his rookie year and was sixth in the league with 17.5 yards per reception last year. He’s not his explosive self this year, averaging just 10.5 yards per catch.

Wide receiver is not a strong point for the Bills (1-2) this season. Robert Woods is their leading pass catcher at the position with 11. Running back LeSean McCoy also has caught 11 passes. Take away Watkins and Greg Salas, who’s also out Sunday, is the Bills’ second-leading receiver with four catches.

The Bills already are dead last in the league with 163.7 passing yards per game, and they’ve played from behind 52 percent of the time. Those numbers don’t figure to perk up if Watkins misses a significant amount of time.
