Tiger Woods returns to golf next week at Safeway Open

Tiger Woods returns to the sport of golf next week for the first time in 14 months.

Maybe Woods felt the need to get back out there after getting kicked out of the Ryder Cup photo. Kidding aside, USA Today explained Woods had targeted next week’s Safeway Open last month:

Woods announced last month that he was targeting next week’s Safeway Open in Napa, Calif., to end a 14-month layoff after multiple back procedures. Woods had until Friday to remove his name from the roster of players for the Tour’s 2016-17 season-opening event.

Woods last played at the Wyndham Championship in August 2015 and wasn’t close to the form fans expected to see him display. In his absence, Nike left the golf apparel business and attention has rightfully waned.

One of the globe’s biggest sporting icons, Woods won’t find it easy to meet expectations, even those tempered. But his return will have plenty of eyeballs on television sets around the globe and is nothing short of a great thing for the sport.

Welcome back, Tiger.
