Which European football clubs are playing at a level above the rest?

With no league matches scheduled for next week, there are a few teams that are consistently dominating its opposition and staying ahead of the pack. Let’s take a closer look at them.

Chelsea

In their second season under Jose Mourinho’s control, they have played near flawless football in arguably the toughest league in the world. In their first eleven matches, they have won nine and drawn two, amassing a total of 29 points and a goal differential of +17.

Newly arrived Diego Costa has ten goals thus far and has proven to be a game changer for the Blues, as he was on Saturday in their 2-1 victory against Liverpool at Anfield. Since his arrival from Atletico Madrid, the only thing that has slowed him down has been a nagging hamstring injury. Rewind to last season, when his countryman Fernando Torres was underperforming as the target man.

They seem to have improved at every position, including goalkeeper. Petr Cech was uprooted by Thibaut Courtois, and the Belgian international continues to consistently make key saves. In fact, the biggest plus for Chelsea has been their consistent play thus far, and with depth on the bench, expect their successful run to continue.

Real Madrid

Anything short of the top spot in La Liga is considered a failure by the Galacticos, and this season can be considered a success thus far.

After a somewhat sluggish start, Los Blancos have been on fire, currently at the top of the table after soundly beating Barcelona, 3-1, in El Clasico.

They are also advancing in the Champions League, knocking off other major players such as Liverpool in both home and away matches. While Cristiano Ronaldo, last year’s Golden Boot winner, is immediately linked with the team, they are laden with talent. Their strikers consist of Gareth Bale, Javier Hernandez and Karim Benzema, and with offensive-minded midfielders like James Rodriguez, it’s no wonder that Los Blancos have a +27 goal differential this early in the season. With a stout defense and veteran goalkeeper in Iker Casillas, expect this team to continue their successful run in Europe into 2015 and beyond.

Paris Saint-Germain

Currently one point behind Marseille, this team is again destined to finish at the top of the table.

PSG has played thirteen games and has yet to lose, with seven wins and six ties. They are also continuing to dominate in the Champions League.

This is a team that has the talent to beat almost all other European teams, and it is doubtful there is a local club that can topple the current champions in France.

Starting with the current front line of Lavezzi and Cavani, they are about to have Zlatan Ibrahimovic back from injury. Ibra has proven to be an unstoppable force for Les Parisians, and will make a huge impact upon his imminent return to the lineup. With a solid midfield anchored by Thiago Motta, Yohan Cabaye and Javier Pastore, and a back line of Thiago Silva, Maxwell and David Luiz, this is a team that will be even more difficult to beat as the season progresses.

Their manager, Laurent Blanc, is a former world class player and French national football team manager. He will accept nothing less than world-class play, and his club appears to be on pace to achieve that goal.
